How to trim a video online without uploading it

Trimming removes unwanted time from the beginning or end of a video, or isolates one useful section. CaptionKite lets you preview the source, choose the range, and create the clip locally in your browser.

Trim a video in four steps

1Choose a video
2Set the range
3Choose accuracy
4Download the clip

The browser previews and processes your local file. CaptionKite does not upload the video to its servers.

1. Choose the section you want to keep

Open the video trimmer, choose a file, and play or scrub through the preview. Move the left handle to the first moment you want and the right handle to the last. The green band represents the portion that will remain.

  • Leave a small lead-in when speech starts abruptly.
  • End after the final action or sentence has fully finished.
  • Check the displayed selection length before processing.

2. Choose Fast or Precise

Fast

Best for speed

Uses the existing encoded video where possible. Because video is organized around keyframes, the downloaded clip may start slightly before the selected time.

Precise

Best for an exact start

Re-encodes the video so the cut can begin at the chosen point. It takes longer and may change file size or visual quality slightly.

Practical recommendation

Try Fast first for rough extracts and long recordings. Use Precise when the opening frame or exact spoken word matters.

3. Understand the output format

WebM sources download as WebM. Other supported sources, including MP4, MOV, M4V, and previewable MKV files, download as MP4. The filename changes so the original is not overwritten.

A familiar extension does not guarantee that every browser can decode the codecs inside. If the preview cannot open, try a current Chrome or Edge browser or convert a copy to MP4 or WebM first.

4. Check the downloaded clip

  1. Play the beginning and confirm the first useful frame and sound are present.
  2. Jump to the end and make sure the final action or sentence is complete.
  3. Check audio synchronization in the middle.
  4. Keep the source file until the new clip has been verified.

If a Fast cut begins too early, repeat the job with Precise selected.

Local processing and practical limits

Trimming happens on your device, so processing speed and practical file capacity depend on available browser memory and your computer. Keep the tab open during the job and close other memory-heavy tabs when working with a long or high-resolution file.
